Check at Your Own Risk

In this occasional feature, we'll shine the spotlight on one of the many settings Quick Blog offers that might otherwise have escaped your notice.

Today, we'll look at a fairly straightforward one -- but one that could have important consequences if you change its default setting. I'm talking about the "Show author email in feeds" setting, shown below.

Show author email in feeds setting

In your RSS or Atom feeds, we can include your email address (or the entry's author if you're a paying customer—thanks, by the way) with every entry. Since email addresses are not currently exposed on the blog in any other way, this might seem like a surreptitious little way of giving your dear readers a way to reach you.

Alas, RSS or Atom feeds are regularly downloaded by search engines and those of a more nefarious bent. Your thoughtfulness—letting readers have a way to contact you—could end you up in Spamville. We don't want to move you to that odorous city without your explicit say-so, so we've turned this option off by default.

You may wonder why such a setting would even exist. If I remember correctly, Joel Spolsky of Joel on Software fame (though he's probably only famous among software engineers and usability types, but that's me to a T) once opined that a setting represented a disagreement between software developers that ended with a shrug, and a decision to let the user make the final choice. Some of us thought that someone might actually not mind the spam in view of the increased accessibility, while others said we should never show it at all. In the end, we decided to empower you the customer and turn it off by default. (And I honestly can't remember who was on what side or even if the two sides weren't actually just one person debating with himself.)

You can publicly display for your feeds by moving the "Feed List" sidebar item from the Available list to the Active list on the Design Blog > Sidebar page. If you don't want to do that but you do want to access your feed, they follow a standard format:
      • http://YourBlogsURL/rss2.aspx: RSS 2.0 main feed
      • http://YourBlogsURL/atom.aspx: Atom 1.0 main feed
      • http://YourBlogsURL/comments/rss2.aspx: RSS 2.0 comments feed

      • http://YourBlogsURL/EntryPermalink/rss2.aspx: RSS 2.0 individual entry comment feed

Greetings Onca, Presently the ability to copy metatags, or indeed any info, into the header section of Quick Blog isn't possible. We're investigating the inclusion of such a feature within a future update. Please let know if there's anything else we can assist you with. Regards John Quick Blog Team

Hi, I am wanting to set up a family blog with the intentions of setting it in a password protected htaccess directory.
I would like to allow comments to be posted right away instead having to wait until I approve them. Does Quick Blog have this capability?

    Thanks, Ken

      Greetings Ken,

Currently  there's no direct user access to the hosting account that the Quick Blog is located which would allow the password protection feature you have mentioned. We have had requests for password protected blogs and they are under consideration for inclusion in a future release.

You can allow comments to appear without moderation by going to settings , discussion settings and changing the moderate comments to off.

    Couple questions:

I have a quickblog account to be setup for family and want to be able to have designated authors post entries via e-mail. I had it set to work and in fact one family member was able to post something automatically, another sent a message and not only did it not post but I never received the forwarding copy to my e-mail that I had configured for the posting address. I've doublechecked all the settings and e-mail addresses from the authors and they are fine.

Also, is there any way to change the base templates? Maybe add more graphics etc.

      Greetings,

Thank you for your feedback on the blog and the email posting feature.   Firstly I can give general advice on what may be the problem but should you have specific issues  either let me know and I'll  test your specific scenario / account.  The email service only accepts mails from accounts known to it. If they sub author had mailed from an address not included in the authors or account owners then it would be ignored

As to the templates we've just started a transition  to CSS templates which will allow us to turn more control  over to the user.

one other question involving e-mail blogging: what should be the expected processing time between when the e-mail is sent and the entry gets posted? Settings are for all posts to be approved from designated authors.

Had comments from some of the people using my blog. The entries show up light gray and can be hard to read. I cannot find any way to change the text color. Most are not big time computer users and the last thing I'd want to tell them is to embed stuff in html. Is there anyway to change this or will I need to wait for the CSS upgrade?

      Greetings,

As the new templates appear they will default to the new darker text and we'll provide a method to manually adjust this in a future release.   If you would like I can manually change yours  in the interim.

Currently the background color/ images are set within the template choice. This is an item we look forward to addressing in a future version and as we progress through replacing our existing templates  with CSS based ones that day's getting nearer.

When I attempt to import an RSS feed from other blogs I have, I get an error. Is this because I am using the free version of Quick Blog?

      Misty,

Sorry for the delay in replying. The error is not due to you being on a freeblog.  We've found a few cases with this feature were the feed trying to be imported contains information that shouldn't be present  but without knowing the URL  / details of the site I can't speculate further on where the break is occuring.  Drop us a line or call support and we'll take a look into this for you .

I'm new to Quick Blogcast, though I've been with GoDaddy for a couple of years now.

I was wondering if there is a way to include a sitemap. I'm using Google Webmaster Tools, and it asks me to either add a Meta Tag to the homepage, or upload a file, to a specific address in order to verify that I'm the site owner.

The only thing is, I don't see a way to edit the HTML, or upload the file to the URL suggested by Google because on a blog the date stamp is included in the URL.

Therefore I can't verify ownership, or add a sitemap for this vital search engine.

      Robert,

This is currently  not a feature within the templates  but closer integration with  these tools, ability to add html to the program's  head area are on our roadmap.  We're also considering adding the sitemaps directly for those that require them.

      Greetings

It takes less time than I did to get back to your comment.. sorry I took a look at your account and noticed that a free, and paid version were trying to use the same location which has since been remedied.

Depending on whether the blog is set up on an existing or new domain the time varies from  < 30 minutes to up to 48 hours in the latter.
